The Great Afghanistan Cat Rescue

For some marines stationed in Afghanistan, one thing made their tour of duty much more bearable: the local stray cats and kittens.

No one minds the cats on the base. They’re cute, friendly, loving – and they keep the base free of snakes and mice (a huge bonus!).

But when one of the kittens, Kiki, went missing, Corporal Brian Chambers felt it. When Kiki surfaced a few days later in terrible condition, with four bad cuts on him, Chambers realised how attached he was to the cat. After Kiki received treatment and became his old self again, Chambers decided to get the cat out.

Putting up some of the money himself, and getting the rest through some wonderful donations, four kittens were taken on an arduous journey out of Afghanistan. Their journey, aided by rescue organisation Nowzad Dogs, took them through Pakistan, then New York and finally Houston and Detroit. Unfortunately two of the kittens didn’t make the trip, but Kiki did, and is now living with Chambers’ parents in Houston, patiently awaiting the day his new Dad can come and get him.
